Cylburn Mansion
Growing up at Cylburn is a nature-themed series for preschool children ages 3-5. The program will run from 10-11:00 a.m. on Wednesdays. The Growing Up program introduces preschool children to the natural world and the principles of ecology and conservation. Classes are offered as a session of six sessions led by Lili Donnelly Levy. An activity and snack will accompany each session. Enrollment is limited to 15 children, so early registration is recommended. The fee for a session of six classes is $60 for members and $70 for the general public. (Individual sessions $15) Ms. Levy served as the Director of the Cylburn Nature Science Camp this past summer. She is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art and has had a lifelong interest in nature.

Spring Ephemerals, Wildflowers and Flowering Trees! Grab your walking shoes and discover springtime at Cylburn Arboretum by exploring the woodland trails and gardens at Cylburn Arboretum. Join a Cylburn naturalist for a guided walk, followed by soup and salad served in the historic Cylburn Mansion prepared by Atwater’s. A special soup and salad will be created to reflect the Cylburn walk. A representative from Atwater’s will discuss the soup making process, the nutritional benefits, and the source of the ingredients. Where else can you find trout lilies, skunk cabbage, and Virginia bluebells in Baltimore City? Each walk cost $20 for members and $25 for non-members. Spaces fill up quickly, so call 410-367-2217. Discover the beauty of designing with one of the Federated Garden Club’s most interesting designer, Annette Richter. Annette is a long time Accredited National Flower Show Judge, has served the Federation in numerous executive positions and now offers her expertise to you. Marilyn Potter is a National Horticulture Flower Show School Instructor and an Accredited National Flower Show Judge. She finds tulips to be extremely interesting. She has visited the Netherlands on more than one occasion and finds Keukenhof Gardens with their thousands of tulips to be a highlight. Marilyn will have some fact and fun tid-bits to share with you about the tulip and what makes them so wonderful. Limited to 20 participants. Call 410-367-2217 to register. Did you know that a great source for natural dyes can be found right in your own back yard! Roots, nuts and flowers are just a few common natural ways to get many colors. Yellow, orange, blue, red, green, brown and grey are available. Children will learn where colors come from in nature. Christa Partain, Chair of the Maryland Native Plant Society's Greater Baltimore Chapter will lead the program. $5 per person.

Learn a simple, fun way of displaying beautiful flowers for you and your guests at your front door. . . .or how about being able to step out your kitchen door to cut the fresh herbs for dinner!!! Come and see the demonstration, by Marilyn Potter, on constructing a ‘Potting Tower’ suitable for any small area. Marilyn is a member of two Garden Clubs, a National Accredited Flower Show Judge, and a National Flower Show School Instructor, and serves as the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland Educational Coordinator at Cylburn. Marilyn enjoys giving programs and sharing her knowledge with others. Books and Botany: History of Botanical Illustration

Paul Espinosa, Library Assistant at the George Peabody Library, will lecture on the history of botanical illustrations from the woodcuts in 15th and 16th century herbals to hand-colored copperplates, by such lights as Robert Thornton and others, to floral 'dictionaries' mass produced in the 19th century. Mr. Espinosa’s lectures are very popular. $10 member; $15 non member

Baltimore Premiere of Documentary Green Fire: Life of Aldo Leopold

The Cylburn Arboretum Association and the Maryland Native Plant Society are pleased to host the Baltimore premiere of the film Green Fire, highlighting the life of Aldo Leopold, the founder of the modern green movement. The documentary will be shown in the Cylburn Arboretum Vollmer Center, a Baltimore City green building managed by the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks. Following the film premiere, a panel discussion will explore how Leopold’s vision has found its way to Baltimore. UME Master Gardener Lecture: Lead and Other Contaminants in Baltimore Urban Garden Soils: What You Can Do To Protect Your Family

Rufus Chaney, Senior Research Agronomist from the USDA-Agricultural Research Service, will has been doing research on Baltimore soils and contaminants since 1980. Analysis of garden soils allows one to understand the potential need for special care to protect your family from soil contaminants. Rufus will address concerns about lead uptake by crops, food safety, absorption of lead from soil ingested by young children during play, and exposure to garden soil returned to homes on shoes, clothes and tools. He will also discuss the relatively low bioavailability of lead in Baltimore’s soils due to the use of phosphate and organic fertilizers which promote formation of a very insoluble chemical form of lead. Cylburn Sounds: Peabody Ragtime Ensemble Concert

Cylburn Arboretum is pleased to host the Peabody Ragtime Ensemble made possible through a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council Touring Grant program. The 7-piece Ensemble presents a quirky concert program of musical selections interspersed with “edu-taining” commentary that places the music in its historical context, reflecting the virtuosity, scholarship (and humor!) of its various members. An Introduction to Geocaching

This program will introduce families to Geocaching a high-tech hide and seek game that will get the family outdoors and on the trails searching for Geocaches. Edible wild plants are wild plants with one or more parts that can be used for food if gathered at the appropriate stage of growth and properly prepared. Wild edibles could be weeds growing in urban areas are native plants growing in deep forest. Join UME Baltimore City Master Gardener Lisa Gonzalez for a field walk and learn some basic skills for foraging, gathering food or provisions from wild sources. She has entered and judged at the Philadelphia Flower Show. She will be showing some techniques for putting together Flower Show Designs earning you that Blue Ribbon! This will be one design program you will not want to miss. There will be a discussion, question and answer period following the demo. Free and open to the public.
