A wonderful groundbreaking ceremony for the new Visitors’ Orientation and Education Center was held on June 3, 2008 and was a resounding success! The new 10,000 square foot state of the art “green” building is a public-private partnership among the Cylburn Arboretum Association, the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland, the Horticultural Society of Maryland and Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks.
A wonderful Green technologies will reduce the building’s impact on the environment with plans for a green roof, composting toilets, geothermal heating and cooling. A well-landscaped and newly designed parking lot will bring vehicles into a central location and will allow most of the Arboretum’s grounds to remain a quiet and relaxing pedestrian experience. The building will also contain a 250-seat meeting hall.
Other capital improvements on the grounds concurrent with the new building construction include an expanded main entrance and renovated drive, a new service road, utility and data upgrades throughout the property , enhanced pedestrian circulation, and a modernization of the production greenhouse and maintenance staff facilities.
A completion date in 2009 is expected.
